Middle East update

Information for growers

HortNZ is closely monitoring the fast-moving situation in the Middle East, which is impacting the global supply chain. We’re working collectively and collaboratively for the good of growers.

Here's what you need to know:

Fuel

  • HortNZ has advocated for horticulture to be classified as essential sector and prioritised for fuel allocation
  • Clarity and certainty are vital so growers can plan and workers can reliably travel to work
  • New Zealand is currently in Step 1 of the Government's 4 step National Fuel Plan, things are operating normally
  • The National Fuel Plan is about making sure New Zealand can distribute fuel fairly and efficiently
  • Aviation fuel, petrol and diesel are all tracked under the plan
  • There is no need to change the way you order fuel or stockpile, the system has plenty of supply
  • EECA are running a public campaign on ways to reduce fuel use and improve efficiency, but growers are encouraged to carry on as usual for now
  • There is growing awareness of the theft of rural fuel – we encourage growers to take preventative measures and remain vigilant
  • It is a good idea for growers to familiarise themselves with rural crime prevention guidance and to report any incidents by calling 105 or via the police website here.

Fertiliser

  • MPI is working with fertiliser suppliers to track availability
  • Fertiliser companies have indicated that there is sufficient product available to meet autumn demand – even in the case of increased orders from farmers and growers.

Workforce

  • The RSE scheme has been highlighted as a priority
  • The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and the Ministry for Primary Industries are working together to ensure there are no immigration issues if workers get stuck in New Zealand.
